Social Media and Me

As a student in the digital age everything I do is affected by social media. I use it to check in with people that I have lost personal contact with, to research potential purchases and even to figure out what to make for dinner. Yesterday Dean Brach made an interesting point that although we follow people on sites such as Facebook and LinkedIn, we don't necessarily still have a personal connection with them. We feel like we know people when in actuality we only know their social media persona. After giving his point some thought, I realize how right he is. I don't have 900 friends in real life; that would be ridiculous. Social media tricks our brain into thinking we are having real contact when we aren't. Aside from that, sites such as Yelp help me decide where I should eat, shop, and go with friends. It has become an integral part of my decision process. Actually thinking about that it seems that Yelp takes a lot of spontaneity out of my decisions...

Fun Fact

So something many of you don't know about me is that I have been and will be a contestant in Miss Maryland USA. In high school I did Miss Maryland Teen and had an absolutely miserable experience. I found the girls to be catty and overall just not my "type of people." After I graduated college I found myself in not so great shape and really needed a goal to get me into a healthier lifestyle. I entered Miss Maryland last year with very, VERY, low expectations because of the negative experience I had with the Teen competition. So I trained, and did everything I was supposed to do, although I must say I kind of lost most of my drive after a while because eating healthy is working out all the time just isn't fun. But anyway, the weekend of competition I can't say that I was super ready, but I had a great time. I met some great people and learned a lot about myself and what I can accomplish. This year I'm not going into the competition with any hopes of winning. I just want to present the best me I can. I can however say that I will be much better prepared this time!

Maiden Voyage Post

So this is my first time ever creating a blog and I am kind of unfamiliar with the entire process so here goes nothing! Since I don't have an internship (yet) I suppose I will just post about what I have enjoyed about the program thus far. I have really enjoyed the since of camaraderie that has been instilled from day 1 of the program. Apparently we're going to be spending a lot of time together so it has been nice to get to know everyone, both in a professional sense as well as a personal one. I am super excited to get to know everyone better any hope that we can form great friendships from this.  Hopefully next time I will have some internship news to post, but as I'm sure many other people can agree, the entire internship process is incredibly frustrating (which I would imagine is not that different from the actual job market!)
